Earlier this week, we celebrated evolution with a classic work scribed by Charles Darwin. Now, we’re introducing another tale about survival of the fittest, written by another Charles. The first part of Great Expectations was published 152 years ago, tomorrow (12/01/1860) by Charles Dickens and is still a must-read to this day.
The Internet Archive has this classic available for you to download, free of charge, as always.

It’s considered the foundation of evolutionary biology and the first 1,250 copies of the book were published 153 years ago, this week.
Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was equal parts pivotal and controversial for challenging traditional religious belief systems and suggesting that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection.
It’s a must-read and can be downloaded, free of charge, thanks to LibriVox and the Internet Archive.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born 191 years ago, this day (mental note, there’s a lot of 1’s & 2’s in both dates). The Russian author’s work explores the human psyche in 19th-century Russia and the novel many believe marked the burgeoning of his genius was Crime and Punishment.

Next week, the Future of Music Coalition will hold its annual summit in Washington, D.C. and we’re excited to be participating in an event that touches on the issues surrounding the intersection of music and technology.
Naturally, we’ve been following them on Twitter for updates and were surprised by the following revelation:

Fugazi played their last show 10 years ago today.
— Future of Music(@future_of_music) November 4, 2012
Fugazi is a legendary post-hardcore band that, incidentally enough, formed in Washington, D.C. in 1987. Their live performances are incendiary, to say the least. Even though they may have not delighted concert-goers in a decade, there is good news for fans.
The Internet Archive has 18 recordings of their live shows for you to enjoy including the last show in their hometown:

Last week, we snuck Andrew Bird into our weekly recap, because we’re such huge fans and seek out any excuse to mention him, and kinda forgot that he released a brand new album today.

So, if you’re looking for a good Devil’s Night soundtrack (of the southern twang variety), stream it here for a limited time.

If you want to feel the full impact of Bird’s latest work, however, it probably helps to listen to the companion piece, Break It Yourself, released earlier this year. Most of these tracks can be found on his Live at Chautauqua Auditorium set that’s available for free, courtesy of the Internet Archive:
