Over the weekend, we watched as both the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants lost a game in the Major League Playoffs. It reminded us of a time when both teams competed against each other in the 1989 World Series which was interrupted, halfway through, by an earthquake that took down a section of the Bay Bridge and left San Francisco devastated.
That, however, was not quite as terrible as the major earthquake that hit April 18, 1906. The side effects from the natural disaster, including rampant fires, destroyed 80% of the city. Luckily, this footage, shot three days before, survived as is now a short film called Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire. It’s available for torrenting, thanks to the Internet Archive.
