Did you know Charlie Chaplin wanted to make the town of Niles (now Fremont) the entertainment capital of the world? The small town, located about 30 miles Southeast of where we work, has a rich and fascinating history.
The final link in the Trans-Continental Railroad was laid here in 1869, and the Motion Picture Industry arrived in 1912 along with many famous silent film actors including Charlie Chaplin and Broncho Billy Anderson.
The former filmed much of his best silent work and some of it is available for torrenting via the Internet Archive. For your enjoyment, here’s four Chaplin shorts from 1917: The Adventurer, The Cure, Easy Street, and The Immigrant.
